Apple Tasting Day
We had lots of apple treats to sample last Thursday during our apple tasting. Throughout our apple theme, we compared fiction vs. nonfiction texts by reading various apple books. We also have been learning how scientists use their senses to investigate, so we used our sense of taste during our apple party and graphed each child's favorite apple treat. Thanks to all of the parents who sent in a yummy apple dish or drink for this fun day :)

Sink or Float
During science today we conducted a "sink or float" experiment. The students learned about the scientific process of asking a question, forming a hypothesis, following a procedure, collecting data, and coming to a conclusion. We tested a penny, straw, marble, and plastic cup. Most of the students' predictions were correct until we came to the cup. Some cups sank and some were floating. The students noticed that the cups with no water inside were floating and the cups that were filled with water were sinking. We concluded that mass affects whether an object will sink or float. So if your child asks to take several items to the bathtub tonight you now know what they are up to :)

Talk Like a Pirate Day
Oakland students celebrated "National Talk Like a Pirate Day" by dressing up as pirates. The day was filled with activities around the pirate theme. We had a special guest from the community visit our class to read "Pirates Don't Change Diapers" by Melinda Long. The students rotated through pirate themed workstations during our math time. We learned several pirate jokes that some students have shared below. And we ended our day with some yummy, creative treats provided by our wonderful parents.

Goodies with Grandparents
Our sweet first graders enjoyed spending time with their grandparents last Tuesday at "Goodies with Grandparents." Last Monday, we read the book Saturday and Teacakes which is about a little boy recalling memories of riding his bicycle to his grandma's house every Saturday to spend the day together. The little boy described how his grandma had homemade biscuits waiting on the table and how they would work in the yard all morning and then come inside to eat a fresh tomato sandwich and make teacakes together. As a class, we brainstormed memories we all had with our grandparents. The students are currently working on a narrative writing piece to describe a special memory they have with one of their grandparents. Please enjoy the pictures taken on "Goodies with Grandparents" day of some students in our class.
